The Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) has long remained inconspicuous to most of the world, yet indigenous tribes across the northern hemisphere have revered it for centuries. Unlike cultivated Chaga, which lacks many of its bioactive compounds, wild-harvested Chaga develops its potent medicinal properties over 10–20 years as it parasitizes birch trees. The earliest documented use of Chaga dates back to Ötzi the Iceman (3300 BCE), whose preserved body was discovered in the Alps. Among his belongings were three medicinal mushrooms, including Chaga, which he likely used to treat parasitic infections and inflammation.

The Khanty people of Western Siberia and the First Nations of North America also recognized Chaga’s potent healing properties. The Cree called it Wiskakecakomikih, after a mythological character who discovered its benefits accidentally.
